The R-Word Film Premiere

The R-Word Film

On Sunday, October 6th at 3pm SARAH Inc. is hosting the film premiere of The R-word at The Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center in Old Saybrook. In partnership with the R-Word Film Production, we are striving to raise awareness around the negative impacts of the everyday use of the R-word in society.

SARAH Inc.’s mission is to Enhance Skills and Enrich Lives of all Individuals with Differing Abilities. Our vision is person-centered and outcome-driven. Founded in 1957, SARAH Inc. provides services, supports, and advocacy for children and adults with developmental and other disabilities and for their families. We believe that all people have the inherent right to live, learn, grow, work, and fully participate in both the opportunities and the challenges afforded in the community.

The R-Word is a purposeful look into the long-reaching history and lasting implications of the word retard(ed) and current attitudes and perceptions about people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The R-Word is an unflinching, heartwarming, humorous, and hopeful journey through out shared human experience.

Through captivating animation sequences, the personal narrative of four sibling stories, and the first-person accounts of self-advocates, we get an intimate and nuanced perspective of the challenges and triumphs of people living with an intellectual disability.
